I just law a link to the demo video for Leap 3D, a usb peripheral that out kinects kinect. I suppose it was just a matter of time til this happened, but I am astonished at the level of detail / accuracy this thing can track (supposedly up to a hundreth of a millimeter). The other aspect that is so appealing is how un-invasive the device is, since it appears to be wireless and tiny, just sitting arbitrarily on your desk. What this means for interfaces to traditional software, I can only guess.  But coming from the world of 3D, being able to use my hands to virtually manipulate objects in realtime holds a lot of promise. Imagine being able to sculpt with zbrush, turning the object over with one hand and using the stylus in space to carve, detail, etc with the other. The future is bright for digital artists 🙂
