The uncanny valley is treacherous territory. ¬†Final Fantasy stumbled pretty deeply into it with Spirits Within, and no about of CG budget was going to fix it. ¬†Avatar finally succeeded years later, thanks to actor capture. Realtime has always had to play catch up, and we’ve had some fairly good attempts at spanning the void. ¬†Specifically Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain, and LA Noire from the now defunct Team Bondi. This latest video uses actor capture for a realtime 3D performance, finally closing the gap in the right way, and my personal hopes for an engrossing, emotionally impactful performance from a game may finally be arriving. Witness the Kara demo, from Quantic Dream (720p required): More on this breakthrough work here.
