The uncanny valley is treacherous territory. Final Fantasy stumbled pretty deeply into it with Spirits Within, and no about of CG budget was going to fix it. Avatar finally succeeded years later, thanks to actor capture.
Realtime has always had to play catch up, and we’ve had some fairly good attempts at spanning the void. Specifically Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain, and LA Noire from the now defunct Team Bondi.
This latest video uses actor capture for a realtime 3D performance, finally closing the gap in the right way, and my personal hopes for an engrossing, emotionally impactful performance from a game may finally be arriving.
